South Africa

South AfricaSouth Africa is widely considered the economic powerhouse of the SADC region and the African continent at large. With a total population of over 50 million inhabitants and a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) exceeding US$10 000, South Africa has been a major economic destination for other African and international job seekers. Although Seychelles, Botswana and Mauritius boast a better per capita GDP in the region (CIA 2012) when compared to the large population of South Africa, South Africa contributes (in nominal terms) 30 per cent to the continent’s GDP21. Notwithstanding such economic strength and recent promising trends, the levels of unemployment in South Africa remain very high – between 25 and 50 per cent, with an average of 25.3 per cent (Statistics South Africa 2010).
