The first survey using accredited publications to establish how well South African universities perform in two specific research areas, relative to each other and to international institutions, revealed that the UFS is one of only six institutions in the country that rank in the top 1% globally in 2006. The results, published in an international academic journal, showed that the relative number of citations (references in published work which credit the original source of research used) in clinical medicine and plant and animal sciences, credited to the UFS, positions the UFS as a world class institution in these two disciplines.
The study was based on the number of citations credited to universities between January 1995 and April 2005 and identified which South African universities made the citation thresholds of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).
Studying at the UFS will introduce you to a varied and interesting student life, not only academically, but also in terms of the culture, sport and recreation. On the main campus, the University boasts sports facilities for more than 20 sport codes, including a state-of-the-art astro-turf hockey field, a modern student centre (with shops and restaurants), a student newspaper and a campus radio station. In addition, students have access to an extensive world-class library, a career and guidance centre, a modern student theatre and various computer centres.
